Chores…

I thought when I got older that chores would become a thing of the past. Something you look back on with remembrance and a smile. I find everything can be smiled at once you look back.

“Kate, can you wash up?”

“Sure,” I’d say. I have never had an issue with washing-up. On the chore list it wasn’t the worst.

I remember one Christmas me and my granddad had pulled the short straw and were faced with the washing-up from a massive meal. I mean there were seven adults in the house and the dirty dishes seemed to stretch for miles…

I remember sighing. Granddad just rolled up his sleeves and started to run the water.

“There’s a lot,” I said.

“There is.”

“I can ask one of the others to help.”

“No,” he said. “I like this time.”

As he started to pile the clean dishes on the side I would wipe them dry.

“What do you mean?”

“This time, is our time.”

I fell silent at that. I never felt that I needed to chatter with Granddad. We had our silences but they were companionable.

“The trick,” he said, “is to enjoy the task.”

“And if you don’t or it stretches for miles and miles…”

“Then do it with a smile.”

“How does that help?”

He just grinned and  nodded behind us. We were already half-way through.

“Magic,” I said in awe.

“Sort of,” he said.

And now I can’t help but smile as I wash-up. I still do chores but no one asks now, I just do them. And I can’t help but grin.

Granddad is no longer with us but sometimes I can feel him standing next to me, smiling.

This post was inspired by the daily prompt – those dishes won’t do themselves (unfortunately)
